It has been a few years now since we embarked on the attempt to document a biography of the Four Seasons. That stemmed from trying to understand why the group we first saw during the 1970s ended. There are few detailed accounts of the group’s history and none of the former members have published (although some have documented) their experiences (yet). Bob Crewe and Charlie Callello have commenced drafts for books and there is the ‘infamous’ Tommy DeVito/Rex Woodard biography which is argued (by Rex’s widow) to be the basis of the ‘Jersey Boys’ musical. Still the subject of legal proceedings this may not appear in print for many years. But our interest since the 70s has been on how the music was created, and as a result of interviews with former members of the group and our extensive collection of articles from the newsletters George Ingram has produced over the years, we have been able to track the story through the 70s to the groups collapse in 1978 and the subsequent demise of the official fan clubs.
The stories of the recordings and ‘timeline’ of the 1970s in Chapters 5 to 11 have been published for some time on our special e-book web page but completing the first four Chapters and the changes in style and sound after Nick Massi left in the mid 60s has proved to be a difficult task. Detailed information re the groups mid 60s career is hard to find and few people remember the detail and the timeline. But with the help of Charlie Calello and others we have now been able to analyse the difficulties the group had in 1966 and how these came about. Our 13 page documentation of this based on interviews explains how the creative process developed and how writer and part producer Bob Gaudio responded with Bob Crewe to keep the group in the charts. Everything changed in the1966 music scene but somehow the Four Seasons managed to stay in the charts. The answer?....well…….a loyal following is part of the story ……along with Bob Crewe and the group’s approach to creating ‘hit’ sounds.
So Chapter 1 is now complete explaining how the group responded to the challenges of the time and maintained success. It can be accessed as a pdf file at our web page The Rise and Fall of The NEW Four Seasons along with all of the Chapters so far or simply download Chapter 1 by clicking here.
